Revised Second Semester Recovery Plan - 1/22/2021

1/22/2021

As we move into the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year, the following information is subject to change along with guidance from the Governor’s Office, the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia State Board of Education, the Local Health Department and the Marion County Board of Education. The West Virginia State Board of Education has the constitutional authority to make decisions governing West Virginia public schools.

In-Person Instruction will begin on January 25, 2021 according to the student’s cohort at individual schools.
  • PreK-8 Schools: Students will attend blended in-person instruction regardless of Marion County’s color on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) County Alert System Map.
  • High Schools: Students in grades 9-12 will attend blended in-person instruction unless Marion County’s color is red on the DHHR County Alert System map.

The second semester began on January 21, 2021.
  • Marion County Schools will operate on the two-day blended instructional model with a 75 minute daily reduced schedule for students upon return January 25, 2021 and continue on that model until further notification. Marion County Schools utilized this same model the first semester with Cohort A attending Monday and Tuesday and Cohort B attending Thursday and Friday.
  • Individual schools have completed their own registration for the second semester regarding blended, distance or West Virginia Virtual School. Please contact your respective schools for information regarding registration.
Please understand:
  • Students who register for distance learning cannot switch until the end of the third nine weeks.
  • Students who register for blended learning may choose later to go to the distance learning model but must then stay there until the end of the third nine weeks. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Students registered for the West Virginia Virtual School must remain there for the semester unless notified by the individual school in relation to Marion County Virtual School Policy 2370.01.
  • Meals will be prepared at the individual schools on Wednesdays unless notified otherwise. Meal pick-up times and locations will be determined at the respective schools.
  • Buses will resume transporting students on January 25, 2021.

Marion County Students in Grades 9 through 12
  • Consistent with the practice that has been in place since the start of the 2020-2021 school year, high schools will move to remote learning the day after the county turns red on the DHHR County Alert System map.
  • High Schools may stay in remote learning until the following Monday.
  • If the county is not red on the DHHR daily map on Saturday, in-person instruction will resume on the following Monday.
  • A county superintendent may determine and direct that a county will resume in-person learning without waiting until the following Monday. Marion County Schools Revised Second Semester Recovery Plan 1/22/2021 2020-2021 Marion County Schools will follow the West Virginia Board of Education Motion Adopted 1/13/2021 Regarding In-Person Instruction for West Virginia Schools
  • If the county is still in red status on Saturday or Sunday, remote learning will continue for another week unless the county superintendent directs the resumption of in-person instruction earlier.

Additional Notes
  • Marion County Schools retains the authority to work with local health officials and to close individual classrooms or schools when a specific health need related to that classroom or school is identified irrespective of the county’s color on the DHHR County Alert System map. Such closures shall be of limited duration and related to the specific health need of the school or classroom.
  • Even when a county is red on the DHHR County Alert System map, teachers and staff will continue essential student support services including meals, student engagement, all special education services and support to at-risk students.

The above information is subject to change along with guidance from the Governor’s Office, the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia State Board of Education, the Local Health Department and the Marion County Board of Education. It is the goal of the Marion County Board of Education to return all students to full time, in-person instruction.
