Attendance Policy
Attendance Policy
All students are expected to attend school regularly to maximize the benefit from the instructional program. White Hall Elementary School has programs to reward those students who continually exhibit punctual behavior and attendance.
The state of West Virginia mandates the following course of action in Section 18-8-4 of the School Laws of West Virginia:
“In the case of five consecutive or ten total unexcused absences of a child during the school year the attendance director or assistant shall serve written notice to the parent, guardian, or custodian of such child that the attendance of such child at school is required and that within ten days of receipt of such notice, the parent, guardian, or custodian, accompanied by the child shall report in person to the school the child attends for a conference with the principal or other designated representative of the school in order to discuss and correct the circumstances causing the inexcusable absences of the child, and if the parent, guardian, or custodian does not comply with the provisions of this article, then the attendance director or assistant may make complaint against such parent, guardian, or custodian before a magistrate in the county.”
Attendance is taken each day and sent to the office to be entered into the WVEIS (West Virginia Educational Information Service) on the office computer. Students who accumulate excessive absences will be contacted directly by the Attendance Officer of the Marion County Board of Education (see above). Should your child be absent, the school requires a written note explaining the absence to be sent with your child the next day he/she returns to school. Excuses phoned in may not constitute an excuse. In addition, parents are asked to document absences or illnesses that extend beyond a few days. Prior permission from the principal must be given before a student can be excused for an educational leave of absence. A written letter requesting a leave of absence must be submitted to the principal in advance. If this policy is not followed, the student will be counted as “unexcused”.
