East Dale Local School Improvement Council

What is a Local School Improvement Council?

Local School Improvement Councils (LSIC) are required per W.Va. Code § 18-5A-2. These councils exist at each public school in West Virginia. Membership of the LSIC is comprised of teachers, service personnel, families, business, and community representatives. An election occurs annually for membership. The LSIC promotes innovations and improvements in the teaching and learning environment in your child's school through providing forums of voices of the education stakeholders in a community, as school employees work alongside families, businesses, and community representatives.

Through collaboration, the LSIC is designed to help a school define strengths and weaknesses of a school and develop solutions to:

  • meet or exceed standards established by the West Virginia Board of Education

  • increase administrative efficiency,

  • enhance the delivery of instructional programs,

  • promote community involvement in the local school system,

  • improve the educational performance of the school generally.

Through the course of meetings at the school, the LSIC may reflect on academics, athletics, discipline, school climate, facilities, needs, improvement. The LSIC may develop and request alternatives to the operation of the school through a waiver of county or state rules and policies, State Superintendent of Schools interpretations, assist in development of the strategic plan, and apply for grants and awards.

The West Virginia Department of Education has developed an electronic resource for schools and communities to assist them in their efforts to provide quality school improvement through Local School Improvement Councils.
