Good morning, Bees:
The West Virginia Department of Education’s Office of School Facilities conducted indoor air-quality investigations at several Marion County schools, including East Fairmont High School during the week of October 15, 2025.
At another high school in the county, the inspection included air sampling and CO₂ level testing, which met industry standards. At East Fairmont, the focus was on identifying areas of elevated humidity and visible mold. Both reports were issued by the same state inspector on October 17, 2025 and released to Marion County Schools on October 20, 2025.
The WVDE confirmed that all areas of our building currently in use — including classrooms, the gymnasium, and adjoining spaces — are clean and free of visible mold. Any mold found was limited to spaces that have been closed since August (the weight room, trainer’s room, and a mechanical storage area), and those areas remain under active remediation.
Marion County Schools continues to work closely with our preventative maintenance company, licensed engineers, and multiple environmental experts to monitor humidity levels, complete necessary cleaning, and plan for long-term HVAC and roofing repairs. These partners are ensuring that all recommendations from the WVDE are implemented effectively and that our air quality remains safe.
A complete replacement of the roof is slated for Summer 2026 with 1 million dollars secured by the WV School Building Authority and a 1.9 million dollar local match from Marion County Schools.
As always, the health and safety of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we appreciate everyone’s continued cooperation and understanding.
If you have any questions, please direct them to me.
Thank you,
Dr. Westfall
