MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS UPDATE

4/27/2020

Each year we celebrate with many activities and events at the end of the school year.  This year is different under the circumstances, to make them a reality.  We have heard from students and the community through various types of messaging that the majority still want a delayed in-person graduation.  It is our hope and goal to make that happen.

Principals, student government groups, and central administration have worked together to move forward with plans for graduation.  To date we have planned a graduation video and delayed in-person ceremonies.

Every date that is announced must meet the following conditions before it can occur:

  1. Governor Justice will have to have lifted the “stay at home” directive.
  2. The most recent guidance of the Marion County Health Department and CDC must be maintained for each event as planned.

Please remember to participate in the WVSSAC’s May 1st event for the Class of 2020!   https://www.wvssac.org

MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS UPDATE

4/22/2020

This week we are back from Spring Break.  We hope everyone was able to create a little extra fun and family activity at home during Spring Break to make it as enjoyable as you could under the circumstances.

Governor Justice made an announcement yesterday that school buildings and facilities will remain closed through the remainder of the school year.  It was very evident that decision was not easy for him, or anyone else involved in making that decision.  His decision, made with the advisement of professionals in the medical community, was made with the reasoning of protection and safety.  We are all asked to continue with care and concern for each other, social distancing, and healthy habits.

Marion County Schools will continue remote learning, student engagement and meal distribution.  We will work with the Graduation Taskforce that was organized to get ideas and information on opportunities to plan for our own celebrations for seniors.  So far, most of those who have contacted me have asked to still have an in-person graduation.  We are reaching out to stakeholders to gather ideas for our high schools to consider in making final plans.

We ask for your patience and input to help us provide something special for our seniors to celebrate the very important milestone of high school graduation.  High schools have been working to assist students with their individual plans to make the smooth transition, in moving towards the next phase of their life.  Watch for requests to participate in providing your input that may come through various methods of communication.

We are blessed with amazing Marion Countians who continue to make sure children are served.

Be well, stay safe.

Superintendent Farley

ALTICE USA EXTENDS FREE STUDENT BROADBAND AND WIFI SOLUTIONS FOR REST OF SCHOOL YEAR

4/16/2020

NEW YORK (April 13, 2020) – In light of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, Altice USA (NYSE: ATUS) today announces that it is extending its free student broadband and WiFi offerings until the end of the 2019 - 2020 school year to help students and schools stay connected to online teaching and learning.

In March, Altice USA began offering its Altice Advantage 30 Mbps broadband solution for free for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not currently have home internet access. Additionally, the Company has been partnering with school districts in the NY Tri-state area to offer the Student WiFi product at no cost for 60 days, a program that provides students who have school-issued devices the ability to use the Optimum WiFi Hotspot Network to access their school’s network and resources from home if they do not have dedicated Internet access. To date, Altice USA has partnered with more than 100 school districts and connected more than 240,000 student devices to its hotspot network as part of this effort.

As states and municipalities around the country announce permanent school closures for the rest of the school year, the Company has decided to extend these solutions until June 30, 2020, to ensure students have reliable access to high-speed broadband connectivity to learn during this unprecedented time.

In addition to free broadband and WiFi, Altice USA has taken steps during this crisis to support customers and local communities. Specifically, the Company:

  • Joined the Keep Americans Connected Pledge, which provides relief to residental and business customers disrupted by the pandemic.
  • Opened up its Emergency Optimum WiFi outdoor hotspots for public use to nonsubscribers.
  • Is collaborating with large hospital systems, schools and government agencies to ensure they have the connectivity services they need to assist the public during this time, including waiving fees for first responders and other critical entities.
  • Is providing free airtime for public service announcements (PSAs) for a number of health and community organizations and government officials, with the goal of helping to educate customers about how to stay safe and healthy.
  • Made News12.com available to all to ensure all residents have access to what’s happening in their local communities, including school closures and local government press conferences.
  • Is delivering free previews of select networks, with live and On Demand content for everyone.

Additionally, Altice USA has rolled out programs to ensure the safety of our employees,
including work from home for the majority of our teams, enhanced paid leave, and providing premium pay to customer-interfacing field and retail employees, contact center-based employees and News field teams.

For more information on what Altice USA is doing to keep our employees safe and communities connected during this time, visit www.alticeusa.com/together .

Altice USA (NYSE: ATUS) is one of the largest broadband communications and video services providers in the United States, delivering broadband, pay television, mobile, proprietary content and advertising services to more than 4.9 million residential and business customers across 21 states through its Optimum and Suddenlink brands. The company operates a4, an advanced advertising and data business, which provides audience-based, multiscreen advertising solutions to local, regional and national businesses and advertising clients. Altice USA also offers hyper-local, national, international and business news through its News 12, Cheddar and i24NEWS networks.

FRAMEWORK FOR THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY

4/10/2020

INTRODUCTION: The Superintendent and Central Office Staff would like to extend a HUGE pat on the back to all of our employees, parents and community members for their part in keeping the school system in service to our students. The abrupt transition to remote learning has not been easy for anyone. We are all learners trying to find our way to encourage each other to get through this emergency. As hard as it is to continue social distancing over an extended period of time, we must all persevere to keep each other safe. Be well, stay safe.

As recommended by the West Virginia Department of Education, the information in this document has been carefully reviewed by the Superintendent and staff. The information in this document provided a firm framework. Specific guidance and considerations are inserted within a text box to customize our local remote learning plan. Marion County Schools supports and appreciates the guidance afforded within this document to support our schools in implementing continuous learning in the face of the COVID-19 mandatory suspension of in-person instruction.

Starting April 6, 2020 the delivery and collection of paper instructional packets were suspended until further notice. This is due to WVDE guidance received on March 31 and April 1.

People are encouraged to stay out of the buildings and work remotely as possible. The next two weeks are supposed to be the critical time, therefore we are trying to limit access to buildings and practice social distancing.

Community members and students – All facilities are closed in an effort to support the Governor’s Stay At Home Executive Order.

Principals – Check buildings every other day and report back to Mr. Farley. Check facilities and freezers every other day. Remember that temperatures are to be recorded on the sheets for both freezers and refrigerators every 72 hours. In case of emergency, contact Terri Atha or Marlena Efaw. Communication is to continue to maintain the essentials. Administrators should contact Central Office Administrators for any emergencies as they occur.

Teachers – Work remotely from home to maintain the continuity of instruction. Student contact needs to be at least once a week. Be mindful there could be several staff members making contact. All are encouraged to collaborate to minimize student contact.

Staff Volunteers – Volunteerism at this time is greatly appreciated to maintain the essentials such as providing and distributing student meals, staffing offices, sanitizing, mowing grass, and emergency repairs and maintenance as needed.

Central Office Staff – Will be in and out of the building for essentials to maintain meal distribution, payroll, and communications. The preferred method of contact will be e-mail.

Reminder Spring Break will be observed Friday, April 10th – Sunday, April 19th, there will be no instruction or meal delivery during this time. Thursday, April 9th is a professional learning day and employees are encouraged to do their own professional learning and conduct Faculty Senate meetings through Microsoft Teams.

MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS UPDATE

4/10/2020

The Superintendent and Central Office Staff would like to wish All of Marion County Happy Easter

Reminders:

Spring Break will be observed Friday, April 10th – Sunday, April 19th – No instruction or meal delivery.

Since meal delivery from the school system is not happening during Spring Break, we have reached out to United Way to help us with what is available in the community.  Please visit to see where assistance with food is available for families in Marion County.  https://www.marionboe.com/uploads/1/1/8/0/118033202/marion_county_food_availability.pdf

An updated version of Marion County Schools Framework for the COVID-19 Emergency is posted at https://www.marionboe.com/uploads/1/1/8/0/118033202/mcboe_remote_learning.pdf.

As we continue our efforts to navigate through this difficult time when there is potential for an increase in the pandemic, we need to support one another by modeling a calm and thoughtful response.  Staying at home and practicing social distancing, if we must go out, is continuing for a little while longer.  It is difficult for many families not being able to gather, as they normally would.  Relax during Spring Break and enjoy time with those in your home.

Thank you for supporting the school system and the efforts to help our students through this period.  We are blessed with amazing volunteers and community organizations who are also working to make sure children are served.

Be well, stay safe.

Superintendent Farley

MARION COUNTY SCHOOLS UPDATE

4/5/2020

The Superintendent and Central Office Staff would like to extend a HUGE pat on the back to all of our employees, parents and community members for their part in keeping the school system in service to our students.  The abrupt transition to remote learning has not been easy for anyone.  We are all learners trying to find our way to encourage each other to get through this emergency. As hard as it is to continue social distancing over an extended period of time, we must all persevere to keep each other safe.

Marion County Schools has been working diligently to keep the main priorities of showing compassion and care, meals for our students and the continuity of instruction in focus. We have tried to keep the lines of communication open through various means.  Our staff is coming up with a variety of creative ways to keep contact for addressing the priorities as best we can.  Newer methods of communication to help us with social distancing is a blessing.

Collaborating with different levels of government (federal, state, county) and various agencies (WVDE, DHHR, CDC and Marion County Health Department) we are doing our best to follow health and safety guidelines to keep our students, families and community safe, while in turn, doing the same for our employees.

We will communicate change as we continue to move forward.  We apologize that there is so much change so often.  We are all learning new information daily, which is prompting the changes we make.

The main portals for communication are:  www.marionboe.com, LiveGrades, E-mail, and Phone.

Be well, stay safe.
