Happy Birthday WV! On June 20, 2023, Marion County Schools celebrates WV Day, a state holiday annually on June 20, to commemorate the state's 1863 admission to the Union as a result of the secession of several northwestern counties of Virginia during the American Civil War.


On June 19, 2023, Marion County Schools honors Juneteenth, which marks our country’s second independence day. It is the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War and has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s.


Today, Marion County Schools honors those who are fathers and those who step in as a father figure in so many ways of support. In the place where the first known Father's Day service occurred in the world on July 5, 1908, Fairmont, WV, Happy Father's Day.


There are some happy campers out there, including Blackshere Elementary. It has been a great start to Summer SOLE in Marion County Schools





MCS Families: Students entering 7th & 12th grades for 2023-24 are required to have the Tdap & meningitis vaccines to return on the first day of school or to participate in summer practices/activities. Students may not attend school without proper verification of vaccines. PreK, K, 2nd, 7th, and 12th grades are required to show proof of Health and Dental exams. Please send documents to your child’s school as soon as possible. ALSO, state law requires that any student who has Emergency Medications ordered must have the medication administration form AND the medication available at school or the student may not attend school. Ensure these are given to the school nurse.

Marion County Schools is proud to host the WV Council for the Social Studies, with 70 teachers from across State at East Fairmont High School. The WVCSS is providing tools, resources, presenters, and practitioners from the state and national level to aid in instruction in WV.





In honor of Flag Day, you’ll notice a new, more majestic flag at East-West Stadium. It was hung by MCS Maintenance Department today. We join in tradition, established in 1916 with President Woodrow Wilson’s proclamation that established June 14 as Flag Day, in honoring our flag.

Marion County is well represented at the WVBMHTAC Conference in Charleston. Jayenne, WFMS, EFHS and NMHS are Working Smarter, Not Harder: Establishing Systems, Enhancing Skills, and Empowering People.






Honoring Jayenne Elementary and their team of educators who are distinguished as a 2023 Model School for Positive Behavior Intervention Support in WV. The team is listening to a by Dr. J Stuart Ablon today at the WV PBIS Conference.



Tonight Marion County Schools honored the achievement and excellence of our math teachers, who have presented statewide on the "2023 Unit Design Collaborative Stars” by the SREB mathematics coaching team of the WVDE.

Fairmont Senior High School's Jamyson Posey has been selected for a position on National Student Council Advisory Board from hundreds of applicants across the US. FSHS, Marion County, nor WV has had a student on a national Student council board since 2006.

Experience, Expertise, and Eager to help. Mary Kuretza is retiring as a school counselor after 40 years with Marion County Schools. Fellow school counselors, Administrative Assistant L.D. Skarzinski and Coordinators Kathy Jacquez and Stacey Oliver honored her today.




Marion County Schools is well represented among 120 student leaders at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar at Fairmont State this week. Superintendent Dr. Heston, a 1989 HOBY, spoke with the group today about ceasing opportunities to be a change agent in education.
